Isshiki Kazari is a folk art born from the faith of Hirata Tenjin Shrine, and is characterized by its interesting and beautiful form using pottery and lacquerware. In this experience, you can make a small Isshiki Kazari lantern using wire, and under the guidance of the preservation society, you can make your own lantern while learning traditional techniques. The origin of Isshiki Kazari dates back to when an epidemic in the town of Hirata was eradicated by a divine visit to Umi Shrine, and a “Daikokuten statue” was made using a set of tea utensils to welcome the god. This tradition has continued for over 230 years and is still carried on today at the Hirata Tenmangu Shrine summer festival.
