Omura Residence
The Omura residence, with its gabled roof and plastered walls, is a building built in the 1880s, making it over 110 years old.
In 2001, a full privately funded renovation was carried out, preserving the old and beautiful atmosphere of the past. In order to preserve the atmosphere of the historic streetscape, old materials that could be used were used as much as possible to recreate the original appearance. The white plaster walls, the cloisonne namako walls, the latticework, and the burnt cedar plank walls on the west side all convey the appearance of the past.
In the center of the building is a garden with a floor made of kimachi stone that leads to the Unshu Hirata Funagawa River that flows behind the building, and a large three-tiered walkway along the river still remains to this day.
The rooms are arranged on either side of a courtyard, and two storehouses are located just past the courtyard from the main house. The arrangement of the storehouses from the pier at the rear to the main house is magnificent.
It won the Encouragement Award in the Private Residence category at the 9th Shimane Landscape Awards. As it is a private residence, it is not open to the public, but the tatami room is sometimes opened to the public for events. Also, if the head of the family is at home, you can ask him to show you around the house.
