If you visit the Momen Kaido, first head to the Momen Kaido Exchange Center. This quaint building is a restored former Nagasaki residence of a distinguished doctor’s family that continued for generations as a surgical mansion during the Edo period. Here you can learn about the history of this area, where cotton cultivation was once thriving, the lives of the people at that time, and the process of turning cotton seeds into cotton products. You can also try weaving cloth using an actual loom.
Inside the building, you’ll find a Momen Kaido tourist information center, an exhibition corner, and a multipurpose room, where you can learn how to walk the road and what to see, so it’s recommended that you start your stroll here. There is also a restaurant called Cotton Flower on the first floor, where you can enjoy a meal or coffee in a relaxing atmosphere.
